The Lily – Extract from “The Sensory Garden”

“Above the clamor of the busy suburban supermarket, Helen heard the buzzing of a bee. She followed the sound into the deep, open petals of an arum lily, and watched its slow dance on the honeycomb of the yellow stamen.

The centerpiece of the bunch, the lily was surrounded by smaller lilies, whose slender buds were yet to open, and cool green foliage. She ran her hand along the length of the one of the hardy green leaves, and the bee flew away.”
